Here We Go Again
Well here we go again…thank god you can’t predict the future because I’m pretty sure no one would’ve looked forward to this shit again!
As Boris starts us in another Lockdown I think its safe to say there are some mixed reactions to it and I for one feel pretty mixed up too…scared because of the increasing numbers; anxious because I know how hard the last one was for us all; wary for the people I know and love who are now back to shielding
This time I have an underlying level of hope because this time we have a vaccine! This time we have a light at the end of the tunnel and I for one will be watching for that burning light with all the positive vibes I can muster.
Now here’s the clincher… HOMESCHOOLING is back! I talked about this during the last lockdown and I don’t want to sound like a broken record but we can get through this! If you have sat and worried about your kids missing some of their education then they’ll be ok. If you have worried about your kids missing out on social interaction then they’ll be ok too…because you worry about them means you are already the only thing they need right now because you will keep them safe and continue to worry about them. As you know, teachers are bloody marvellous folk and they are already doing all they can to ensure your kids will gain all the skills they need so trust the process - your kids don't need to catch up they just need to keep going.
Like last time, it is the kids that don’t have someone worrying about them that worries me. The kids who may not have a decent meal for the next 6 weeks or a warm bed or clothes in winter; a carer to watch over them never mind any means of accessing home learning. The kids who are stuck with an abuser or watching an abusive relationship 24/7. The kids whose parents are at the end of their tether mentally or financially because of what another lockdown means to their families. Those will be the kids that suffer from another Lockdown and keep their teachers awake at night.
Your kids can still flourish being at home with you! You can sit and do their schoolwork with them but also remember if it is too much you can knock it off and try something else (inside information…teachers don’t teach for 6 solid hours a day so you don’t need to either!). Kids don’t just learn social skills from other kids, we can be social with them too. We can talk with them, play games with them, sit with them, or make with them…these are just as important social skills that they may never have had before and we have to look for some silver linings! If you kids can’t tie their shoelaces yet – show them! If your kids can’t make a sandwich yet – let them! If your kids can’t tidy up after themselves –make them 🤣 If you kids can’t make a mean G&T yet – well maybe leave that one but you get the idea! Not all learning in school is work so it doesn’t have to be with home-schooling either and let’s face it, if you are having to work from home or still go out to work that is more important right now. Do what it takes to keep yours and your kids mental health safe and fingers bloody crossed this is the Lockdown to end all Lockdowns! And remember, don't compare yourself to what others are putting on social media...they only put the good stuff ;)
Footnote…for those of you with GSCE and A Level age kids I know this won’t really help and my heart breaks for them but I think they’re probably old enough to help with the G&T making??
If you are struggling then here are some useful contacts...don't suffer alone!
